Kin Lane - Work Experience

Over the years I have worked as a partner, employee, and more recently as a business owner. Currently my my wife and I are working on Original Web Solutions, selling our core applications dealing with e-Commerce around Oregon and wherever else they are needed.

While I enjoy running my own business I also enjoy working with outside development teams in order to keep my skills sharp and increase my interaction with other talented programmers. I always entertain external projects and positions if the right relationship comes along.

Below you will find the primary listing of the work experiences I have had. To see more detailed overviews of the many projects that I worked on please see the projects.

Original Web Solutions Projects

1/1/2000 - Present

Original Web Solutions is owned and operated by my wife, Ishbel, and myself. We develop web sites using our standardized applications as well as provide custom application development consultancy. We started Original Web Solutions (OWS) in 2000 after Ishbel graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies and Economics. With my technology skills and her interest in rural economic development, we thought we could offer a quality solution to businesses and non-profit organizations around the country.

OWS has 3 primary web-applications it offers, Basic Web Site, Basic E-Commerce Site, and Community E-Commerce site. Our applications provide an entire site solution at those 3 levels allowing people to grow their business and web presence with a low cost, self managed solution.

Each solution offers a public side of the site with a custom user interface, as well as an administrative side which allows the client to manage all aspects of their web site. More advanced sites may include a members or private area for the business or organization to deal with a select known group of the public.

In addition to the 3 applications we offer about 60 other unique components that allow users to customize their application in many different ways. All OWS applications are developed in traditional ASP utilizing VB Script and SQL on the server side and a mix of HTML and JavaScript on the client side. All systems are driven by a central and individual Microsoft SQL server databases.

IDX
Eugene, OR 97401

6/1/200/43 - 11/01/2004

Information Distribution Exchange was a recent project that I worked on. Information Distribution Exchange or IDX is a collaborative brainchild between my two partners, Chad Barczak, Jeff Kast and myself. While we worked together for a company which focused on selling heavy equipment inventory via print and online photo-classifieds we discovered what a great team we made. The company we worked for did not realize the value of our team or share our vision. After leaving the company for various reason we got together and created with IDX.

IDX, Information Distribution Exchange, is web-based network which allows users to setup various types of interfaces that allow businesses and individuals to enter inventory into the IDX network by industry. Each account is configured with different goals in mind for allowing the user to access a range of IDX services.

Vihn.net

8/20/2003 - 6/01/2004

Vihn.net (Virtual Inventory Hosting Network) hosted 4 applications with a focus on online inventory distribution and live auction information. Vihn.net had four applications; Inventory Manager, Auction Manager, Auction Association Manager, and Inventory Portal Manager. While working with Vihn.net I rewrote 3 of their applications.

Vihn.net provided customers with complete web site packages built utilizing the central application(s). They had about 200 Inventory Manager customers, 25 Auction Manager customers, 22 State Auctioneers Associations, and 2 high profile portal sites. The primary portal site, My Little Salesman received an average of 35,000 unique visitors per day.

All Vihn.net applications are developed in traditional ASP utilizing VB Script and SQL on the server side with a mix of HTML and JavaScript on the client side. All systems are driven by a central and individual Microsoft SQL server databases.

Working at Vihn.net I lead a team of 2 programmers and work with 3 in house graphic designers and 1 system administrator.

NetCorps
Eugene, OR 97405

3/1/1999 - 12/31/2001

NetCorps is a small non-profit organization that supports other non-profits with their technology needs. It provides a wide range of support, from assistance with software and programming to hardware donation and support. Partnerships with other corporations, foundations, and non-profits have allowed NetCorps to provide technical assistance to many small and medium size organizations nationwide.

When I began at NetCorps is was a small office with 2 employees. The mission struck me so much that I volunteered for 7 months and assisted the organization in raising funds to pay me a salary. By the time I left NetCorps I was the lead developer of a team of 5 programmers, several graphic designers, project managers, and multitude of interns from the University of Oregon .

While with NetCorps I designed oversaw the development of a content management system which was provided at low cost to other organizations to help them build their organizational management capabilities. I also coordinated all database development, taught classes across the west coast, worked with several classes of interns, and coordinated 2 major circuit riding initiatives providing support to many small non-profit groups.

Pic Hitz Entertainment

http://www.pichitz.com

2/15/1994 - 06/20/1998

Pic Hitz Entertainment is a music promotion company promoting music for record labels to commercial radio stations nationwide. Pic Hitz worked to build relationships with music directors at hundreds of radio stations nationwide.

I started at Pic Hitz working as an employee but soon became a partner. I restructured the contact relationship management system from an archaic computer and manual system to a networked database system allowing us to more efficiently track music, artists and the relationships established with hundreds of stations across the country.

Mt Rose Software
Cave Junction, OR 97405

3/10/1989 - 9/20/1993

Mt Rose Software was a software development company that provided database administration system to over 50% of the school districts in the State of Oregon . The systems were used to track attendance, grades, accounting and other needs for the individual schools and district offices.

I was chosen from my high school class to work for the company and I quickly became the primary programmer as the company grew. One of my first tasks was to research a new platform / programming language to develop in, because COBOL which was being used was quickly becoming outdated and tough to replicate.

I chose an early version of FoxPro and proceeded to rewrite the application in FoxPro and successfully implemented the switch. The company was dissolved in 1993 by the owners.
